Set within the Kent countryside, Horsmonden is the transformation of a redundant agricultural Dutch barn into a striking contemporary family home.
Designed by RX Architects and delivered by Coopers, the project centred around retaining the character and agricultural heritage of the original building while creating a highly considered, modern home.
The existing steel frame and distinctive curved roof were retained, forming the architectural backbone of the new design. Natural and robust materials were introduced throughout, creating a refined finish while remaining sympathetic to the barn’s rural setting.
For Coopers, the build required careful coordination between the existing structure and the new architectural elements, with particular attention given to detailing, material transitions and the quality of the finished construction. Expansive glazing brings natural light into the property and creates a strong connection between the internal living spaces and the surrounding countryside.
Completed in 2020, Horsmonden remains a project we’re incredibly proud to have delivered. Six years later, its shortlisting for Home Transformation of the Year (over 2,500 sq ft) at the British Homes Awards 2026 is a testament to the strength of the original design, craftsmanship and collaboration behind the project.
